Jason Coe • Artist
about
Jason Coe is a contemporary artist specializing in non-representational minimalism and semi-surrealism. His preferred mediums include canvas, panel, paper, and reclaimed surfaces, which he manipulates using mixed media techniques with a focus on sustainable materials. Coe's artworks are characterized by a juxtaposition of elements such as color, line, shape, and texture, which converge to evoke a sense of movement and balance.
In his creative process, Coe employs acrylic paints and various mark-making tools, often incorporating found objects and unconventional materials. Surface application is executed with a combination of brushwork, palette knife, and hand manipulation, resulting in pieces that elicit an emotional response reflective of the artist's own inner journey.

His formal art training introduced him to the basics of working in oil paint, charcoal, and clay mediums. He has furthered his creative interests through self-taught methods implementing acrylic, water-color, pastels, and a range of ground creations including cardboard, plaster, iron splinter and powder, and other natural objects. There is an intent to “design the surface” of his paintings, often giving them a heavily layered quality which adds to a feel of sculptural relief.
After completing his university studies, Jason embarked on a career in art while also working in the field of education at secondary and collegiate levels in California, USA. These experiences provided him with opportunities to collaborate closely with fellow creators and educators who shared his interests. Inspired by his background and a passion for Chinese martial arts, Coe's artistic explorations have taken on a broader scope, enriching his creative journey.

In 2011 Jason left the United States to further develop his teaching practice internationally. The time as an international educator has offered him a unique combination of "global learning" along with the application of experiential teachings in an international context.
“I draw inspiration from the world around me, finding beauty in the subtle interplay of light and shadow, the vivid hues of contrasting colors, and the tactile textures that define our environment. What captivates me most is the dynamic relationship between geometric forms and the ethereal shadows they cast, revealing a deeper dimension of depth and complexity.

Moreover, I am deeply intrigued by the profound impact of human intervention on materials—the intricate processes of manufacturing, the relentless cycle of consumption, and the transformative journey they undergo. These observations serve as the foundation for my artistic endeavors, sparking a creative journey that unfolds in a series of paintings.

Each piece of art I create is a personal reflection of my experiences and impressions, imbued with a sense of authenticity and individuality. From the initial concept to the final brushstroke, my creative process is deliberate and methodical, often spanning weeks, months, or even longer.

Ultimately, my goal is to craft works of art that resonate on a deeply personal level, inviting viewers to explore their own interpretations and emotions within the intricate tapestry of each piece.”
Jason's compositions offer a thought-provoking glimpse into society and its various constructs aimed at fostering order, comprehension, and relational harmony. Each of his pieces exudes a distinctiveness, yet beneath the surface lies a common thread of unity that binds them together. This unifying element resonates throughout Jason's body of work, both past and present, with each individual piece adding its own voice to the overarching narrative. Through his art, Jason seeks to express a deep-seated desire to connect, provoke thought, and engage viewers in meaningful dialogue.
